There is no way we can tame fire's role in the forests where it has been an evolutionary force, but we can do much to protect our lives and property. There is also much that society can do to restore fire as a natural function of our forests.

Fire Ecology in the KS - Wildfire is a natural ecological process shaping many forests in the Western U.S., including the forests of the Klamath-Siskiyou.

Fuel Management - Conservationists agree that authentic fuels reduction, especially near communities and homes, is desirable. However, ecologically destructive logging projects in the backcountry are often cloaked as fuels reduction.

Fire Restoration - Fire science and policy throughout the country calls for systematic reintroduction of fire. Continuing to exclude fire from forest ecosystems will result in major disruption of natural ecological processes.

Post-Fire Logging - Following fire, federal agencies and private industrial timber companies hasten to "salvage" log the dead standing trees on burned land. Although forests are highly adapted to fire, they are incredibly sensitive and need time to heal naturally.
