Wildlife gets a focus in Oregon's long legislative session

For years, both the beaver and the wolf have been hot topics amongst landowners, ranchers, forest managers, and conservationists as both have endured attempts to eradicate or greatly diminish their existence from private lands for decades, but those tides are shifting as perspectives are expanding on wild spaces being for all life—not just human life—and how some wildlife species could actually help us.

Barred owls may doom old-growth ecosystems

Serious barred owl encroachment on northern spotted owl habitat has led the US Fish and Wildlife Service to propose a management plan to right the dynamic. Read more about the need for the plan and what the implications could be if the situation is not addressed.

Imperiled species highlight: The northern goshawk

The northern goshawk is an avian species whose population directly relies on the extent of the presence mature and old-growth forests and has been on the decline alongside mature and old-growth forests. The species is currently not listed under the ESA. Read more about the goshawk here.

Part of our work at KS Wild is to track management decisions by the US Fish and Wildlife service to list at-risk species as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. In continuing a 22-year battle to protect their declining populations, we filed lawsuit with three of our conservation allies to list the Pacific fisher. Other species we continue to fight for include the Siskiyou Mountain Salamander, the Wolverine and four species of Lamprey.
